로우-에지스 디자인 스튜디오(Raw-Edges Design Studio)는 이스라엘 디자이너 샤이 알칼라이(Shay Alkalay)와 야엘 메르(Yael Mer)가 런던에 설립한 디자인 스튜디오다. 자극적인 착시와 장난기를 강조한 두 사람의 가구, 설치물, 제품은 놀라운 색상과 패턴, 움직임으로 추억과 동심을 재현한다. 로우-에지스의 창조적인 여정은 종종 틀에 얽매이지 않는 겸손한 실험으로부터 시작된다. 새롭게 구상한 메커니즘, 매혹적인 질감과 색상 팔레트를 탐구함으로써 루이 비통(Louis Vuitton), 비트라(Vitra), 무티나(Mutina) 등 다양한 브랜드와의 협업을 이어오고 있다.

HOMESWEETHOME
for Cozmo and Kornit Digital
로우-에지스는 런던 아파트에서 스위스 산 벽지를 처음 접한 이후 풍경 묘사에 오랫동안 매료되어 왔다. 스타트업 소파 브랜드 코즈모(Cozmo) 및 코닛 디지털(Kornit Digital)과 협력해 제작한 홈스위트홈은 목가적인 시골의 매력과 고요함에서 영감을 받은 컬렉션이다. 우아하고 다채로운 헤링본 배열의 필드 패턴이 인상적이다.

Raw-Edges put their own spin on tradition by harnessing the power of Kornit's digital printing technology. The 'Home Sweet Home' collection showcases the 'Field' patterns, characterised by a herringbone arrangement of dainty, colorful leaves that form intricate backdrops for expansive areas like sofas, bed headboards, and curtains.

HERRINGBONE
PILLOWS

With luminous colours and geometric patterns that belie their handcrafted origins, the Herringbone Pillows convey a sense of freshness and cheer. The intersecting and overlapping strips of colour in varying degrees of intensity were created by repeatedly immersing a textile in a selected colour and transferring the resulting pattern to an exact printing template for the Herringbone Pillows.

HERRINGBONE TREES
헤링본 트리는 직물, 세라믹, 목재가 물에 잠길 때 나타나는 반응을 관찰한 프로젝트다. 색상 필드의 가장자리가 더 흐릿하고 부드러워져 나무에 따뜻함을 가미하는 반면, 처리되지 않은 영역에는 자연스러운 그늘이 강화되어 독특한 디테일을 완성한다.

비트라하우스 로프트는 유쾌하며 예상치 못한 배열로 다채로운 풍경을 선사한다. 4층 규모의 내부는 생활공간과 작업공간이 공존하는 바쁘고 창의적인 가족의 집으로 꾸며졌다. 움직임과 즉흥성, 놀라움을 실현하기 위해 나무, 유리 등의 천연 재료와 활기찬 컬러가 사용됐다.

Our installation focuses on a busy, creative, young family. We have actually created a space for ourselves, for both of us and our two daughters. We want to show how a space can function equally well for parents and kids alike – for living, playing or working.

The light-hearted approach taken by Raw-Edges in their use of materials, colours and products is a defining feature of the presentation – and their work in general. Other key factors of their VitraHaus installation are movement, improvisation and surprise. For Raw-Edges, it was vital to achieve a spontaneous, realistic and above all happy environment.

BACKSTITCH focuses on that ambiguous and irregular universe of stitches, without which the front side, designed to be seen, could not exist. What seems chaotic has its own language and adds a new value, a new intention to traditional craftsmanship, for which Yael and Shay feel great admiration.

BACKSTITCH

간(GAN)을 위해 디자인한 백스티치는 전통 자수를 거꾸로 뒤집어 지저분한 면의 아름다움을 역설한다. 러그는 모호하고 불규칙한 꿰매기에 집중해, 일상적인 물건의 숨겨진 측면을 탐구하려는 호기심을 극대화한다. 그린(Green)과 브릭(Brick) 두 가지 색상으로 제공된다.

HORAH
WonderGlass 2018
밀라노 디자인 위크 스파지오 크리치아(Spazio Krizia)를 위해 제작된 '춤추는 조명'은 여러 개의 주조된 유리 곡선 '잎'으로 조립되고 안쪽에서 측면을 향해 회동하는 움직임을 갖는다. 이스라엘 호라 댄서에게서 영감받은 조명은 동작에 따라 빛의 세기가 변화하며, 회전이 끝날 때마다 유리가 부딪치는 소리가 발생한다.

HORAH is a group of about 30 'dancing lights'; each light is assembled from multiply casted glass curved 'leaves' and has an inner side to side pivoting movement. As a result of this movement the strength of light is dimmed, the shape of each light is constantly transformed and a clacking sound of the glass occurs at the end of each turn.

매력적인 책상 의자 수위(SUI)는 포용하는 듯한 실루엣이 특징이며 책상, 안락의자 등 다목적 사용이 가능한 하이브리드 가구다. 착석 시 넉넉한 각도로 자유로운 움직임이 가능하며, 편안하고 널찍한 사적인 영역을 설정한다. 생기 넘치는 목재 표면과 다채로운 컬러로 재미를 더한다.

Raw Edges has looked to the dynamic nature of production in public spaces. The inviting desk chair is enlivened with a swivel and an embracing wooden surface, creating an intriguing niche with its hybrid, multi-purpose use. When seated, every aspect of the object evokes free movement, with refined yet generous angles, opening for a wide welcome yet private sphere.

AW DESIGNER
OF THE YEAR 2020
2020년 1월 13일부터 20일까지 독일 쾰른에서 개최된 '비하인드 더 씬(Behind the Scene)'은 Raw Edges의 AW 2020 올해의 디자이너상 수상을 기념한 전시다. 지속 가능성을 염두에 두고 디자인된 이 전시는 가능한 적은 폐기물을 만드는 것을 목표로 한다. 새로운 관점을 취하는 전시는 Vitra, Louis Vuitton, Mutina, Golran, Gan, Arco 등 다수의 작품으로 구성된다.

'Behind the Scene' has been created on the occasion of Raw Edges' recent win of the AW Designer of the Year 2020 Award. Designed with sustainability in mind, the exhibition aims to create as little waste as possible.

BRUTA
Superfront 2023

The collection, Superfront’s first full collaboration with an external designer, includes three different modules with distinct characters – base cabinets, wall cabinets and high cupboards. The base cabinet doors have a matt lacquered surface and are available in either off-white or off-black, all of which are equipped with sculptural handles which reinforce the brutalist-inspired aesthetic.

Vitra Accessories Collection
세라믹 그릇과 꽃병 시리즈인 헤링본 용기(Herringbone Vessels)는 대상물을 유약에 반복적으로 담가서 만든다. 수작업으로 진행하는 염색 과정은 침수 각도, 모양, 무게에 따라 결정되는 고유한 패턴을 완성한다.

The Herringbone Vessels, a series of ceramic bowls and vases, are also created by repeatedly dipping the objects in a coloured glaze. This process yields a pattern with an intrinsic logic determined by the immersion angle as well as the shape and weight of the respective piece.

유쾌한 미학이 특징인 돌스 체어는 정교하고 컬러풀한 베이스와 시트, 섬세하게 조각된 화이트 가죽 쉘로 구성된다. 의자 패밀리의 쉘과 시트를 장식하는 마감재는 다양한 세계 문화에서 영감을 얻었다.

웨이비 퍼(Wavy Fir) 컬렉션은 천연 나무의 느낌을 그래픽 모티프를 통해 설계한 작업물이다. 목재는 '확대/축소' 변증법을 사용하여 다양한 인식을 불러일으킨다. 자연스러워 보이지만 거시적인 관점에서 나뭇결의 유연한 움직임을 인식할 수 있다.

The Lake collection is conceived as a contemporary reconsideration of the Persian carpet. The inspiration comes from the lenticular art of Yaacov Agam, an Israeli artist who has revolutionized the world of optical perception in art. The shimmering design is capable of shifting from vivid daylight colors to the more delicate hues of evening, shifting like the watery reflections on the surface of a lake.

레이크(Lake) 컬렉션은 페르시아 카펫을 현대적으로 재해석한 작품이다. 이스라엘 예술가 야코브 아감(Yaacov Agam)의 예술에서 영감받은 작품은 렌티큘러 광학 기술을 통해 환상적인 질감을 표현한다. 2014년 Elle 데코레이션 영국 어워드의 '베스트 영국 패턴' 부문에 후보로 올랐으며, 2015년 월페이퍼 디자인 어워드 '베스트 착시' 부문에서 수상했다.

The Cozmo sofa combines a clean contemporary look with softness and comfort achieved by feather and memory foam. The sofa jackets can be changed quickly and easily giving you the freedom to create a new, exciting look whenever you want. It can be subtle or elegant, with a tone-on-tone approach or a contrasting, eye-catching combo.

모듈러 소파는 깔끔하고 현대적인 디자인에 깃털과 메모리 폼을 사용해 부드러움과 편안함을 더했다. 소파 재킷은 톤 온 톤으로 연출되어 있지만, 대조적이고 눈길을 끄는 콤보를 통해 우아함을 배가한다. 소파의 모듈식 시스템은 공간에 따라 모양을 변경할 수 있는 지속적인 유연성을 제공한다.

TAPE
Mutina 2018

Tape is made up of several coloured patterns on two base tiles, one white and one black. The design consists of a first slight, almost imperceptible pattern on the base tile that evokes the chalky effect of the surfaces of the carreaux-ciment, and a range of eight patterns, all in the five shades of the range: white, blue, green, brown and black.
