2018년 도예가를 비롯한 대지주들은 미국 애리조나 피닉스 중앙에 위치한 드넓은 대지 위에 가족과 함께 성장할 수 있는 새로운 집을 의뢰하기 위해 The Ranch Mine을 찾아왔다. 도자기는 인류 역사상 없어서는 안 될 중요한 요소 중 하나로, 오늘날에도 현대 사회와 문화를 이해하는 데 큰 역할을 차지하고 있다. Foo House는 고대 도자기 예술의 영향을 받아 거친 질감과 한정된 소재로 디자인했으며, 견고한 구조와 정밀한 형태로 설계됐다.

Pottery has played a critical role in most societies in human history as well as our modern day understanding of those societies. In 2018, owners of a large piece of land centrally located in Phoenix, including a ceramic artist, approached architecture firm The Ranch Mine to design a new home in which their family could grow and create. Influenced by the ancient art of pottery, 'Foo' is a house designed to be rigid in structure while malleable in use, precise in form while imperfect in texture, and varied in volume while limited in materials.

Schematically the house is broken into its functional elements, a living volume, a sleeping volume and a utility volume. They are arranged on the site to create a large courtyard, using the buildings to provide privacy and shelter from the desert sun. The outdoor areas were designed for both pleasure and production. Stepping out from the house you are welcomed into a covered patio with a dining and grilling area just steps away from a sunken fire pit area, olive grove, and pool with an integrated Baja shelf and hot tub providing numerous entertaining possibilities for all types of weather. In terms of production, the property includes a chicken coop, citrus grove, stone fruit grove, and raised planting beds for vegetables and herbs.

Foo House의 내부는 생활, 취침, 유틸리티 등 각각의 기능을 갖춘 볼륨으로 구획되어 있으며, 야외 활동을 즐길수 있는 외부 공간이 마련되어 있다. 사막의 뜨거운 태양을 막아주며 프라이버시를 보호하는 넓은 안뜰을 배치해 은신처를 형성했다. 이 안뜰에는 식사가 가능한 파티오와 온수 욕조가 있는 수영장, 요리를 할 수 있는 화덕 구역, 올리브 과수원 등이 갖춰져 있다. 다양한 부대시설은 어떠한 날씨에도 영향을 받지 않으며, 닭장, 감귤을 비롯한 여러 과일과 채소, 허브, 약초 등을 재배하며 생산적인 활동을 즐길 수 있는 텃밭 또한 만나볼 수 있다.

Double height and vaulted spaces were used throughout the home to change the feeling of the living spaces and highlighted by elements like the board-formed concrete fireplace that draws your eye up to the ceiling and over the open living space to a loft that features a steel bar for taking in distance mountain views. The vaulted ceiling in the pottery studio lets in natural light filtered by an old tree while the vaulted ceilings in the kids' rooms allows for a reading loft above the ensuite bathroom and closet.

집의 외부는 콘크리트, 녹슨 골판지 금속, 치장벽토, 강철 및 유리와 같이 거친 사막을 견딜 수 있는 재료로 구성했다. 이 재료의 물성은 날씨의 도움과 시간의 흐름에 따라 서로 보완하는 방식으로 변화하여 독특한 질감으로 마감된다. 내부 공간에는 원목 소재를 활용해 따뜻함을 더했다. 쓰러진 나무를 재활용해 맞춤형 테이블을 만들고, 다락방 계단을 완성했다. 거실과 주방, 파우더룸, 세면대 및 복도에도 콘크리트와 목재를 조화롭게 사용해 사이트가 지닌 매력을 실내 곳곳에서 느낄 수 있다. 천장까지 탁 트인 넓은 창과 높은 천장고를 적용해 개방감이 느껴지도록 공간을 재구성했으며, 벽난로와 철근 로프트 등의 시선을 끌어당기는 매력적인 요소를 배치했다.
